Health: Relief For Sinus Suffers

Stephanie Stahl

In health, with Daylight Saving Times this weekend, spring allergy season is not far away. For millions of people with allergies, that means misery. Medical Reporter Stephanie Stahl has details on a new way for sinus suffers to breathe easier.

You have heard of angioplasty for the heart, but now there is Sinuplasty for stuffed up sinuses.

Gloria Ward has suffered with sinus infections for years.

When medication didn't work, she turned to a new surgery called Balloon Sinuplasty.

"I was having a lot of numbness on one side and a lot of problems hearing out of the one ear, and it has to do with the sinus infections I was having," said Gloria.

Sinuses drain through tiny passageways. When they're blocked due to allergies, colds, or infections, the pain of congestion kicks in.

With the help of a camera scope and a lighted wire, doctors open up the sinus passages with a tiny, saline filled balloon.

The high pressure balloon permanently reshapes the sinus opening. There's no cutting involved and the operation can take less than an hour.

"Most people will say that it completely changes their life. They didn't realize how bad off they were before they had this done," said plastic surgeon, Dr. Marc Kerner.

Recovery time is quick.

Gloria said she had some pain for 24 hours and was back to work in three days.

And she's hoping to be smelling flowers this spring.

About 20,000 patients like Gloria have had Balloon Sinuplasty and it is available here in Philadelphia the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
