Allergy season is here

Matthew Kruger

As the weather warms up, trees and flowers begin to bloom. That means there is more pollen in the air. The typical time for allergy season to start in southern Colorado is March 1. Tree pollen is highest this time of year, and the number of people suffering from allergies in Colorado is growing.

Doctor Nathan with the Asthma and Allergy Research Center in Colorado Springs says that the number of people reporting problems has risen from 40 million to 65 million people in the past decade alone.  The main source of pollen here locally is trees, and the weather is a big factor. The winds will blow and spread the pollen around.  This is going to enhance allergic reactions.

Nathan says that the thing that makes pollen allergenic - it's light enough to get airborne. The particles are small enough to get into the nose and eyes to create symptoms.

And while it's tree pollen now, other allergies can be expected through the year.

Here in Colorado, we have a distinct tree season (spring)  March and April. In the summertime, it's the grasses - June and July. Then as we roll into the fall - August, September, October - it's the weeds.  So with the warmer weather, you can expect the allergies to continue.

Doctor Nathan says that those sensitive to allergies should avoid being outside when the pollen is highest. Generally, that will occur early in the morning and during the evening hours of the day.
