Pollen allergy rings alarm in Capital
Islamabad
With the onset of spring season, the number of pollen allergy patients is mounting significantly and the hospitals and clinics are thronged by allergy patients for the remedy and treatment.
To redress the issue, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has expedited its efforts to fight the pollen allergy, which has become a permanent nuisance for the resident of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Senior Director Health Services CDA, Dr Saeed Ahmed
said the Authority has set up eight pollen allergy relief camps across the Capital including
one in Rawalpindi in order to
facilitate the people who be-
come prey to the illness due
to their frequent visits to Islamabad regarding their jobs or business. It is for the first time that the Authority has set up a pollen allergy camp in Rawalpindi, he said.
Meanwhile, Islamabad Capital Territory Administration has also taken all the precautionary measures in this regard and is ready to cope with any emergency situation, said the spokesperson of the capital administration.
Experts say the pollen count during current season is far lesser than that of the previous year. According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, the pollen count on Friday was 373 per cubic meter of the air as compared to about 4,000 during last spring season.
Dr Saeed Ahmed said the Authority has set up eight anti-pollen allergy camps at F-7 Markaz, Sector I-8, I-10, G-9, G-10, Pak Secretariat, Rawal Town and Satellite Town.
All these relief camps have been equipped with necessary equipment and medical facilities.
Besides this, the authority would also start a mobile service which would move in every part of the Capital in order to treat the asthmatic patients, who are unable to move out of their homes or offices.
The district health officer said the administration is on alert to deal with any emergency adding that a main relief centre would also be set up in Abpara Community Centre.
According to the health experts, the pollen allergy patients should use mask and avoid dust and fragrance rather to use medicine and taking precautionary measures. It can be beneficial only if the patient starts taking medicine about 15 days before the arrival of the spring season.
According to an estimate, about 120,000 citizens were the victims of this disease in the capital. In some cases the disease had become fatal.
Since early 1990s, the disease has become one of the gravest health problems of the city as every year hundreds of people visit hospitals or clinics for treatment against the pollen allergy.
Some experts hold paper mulberry tree as the sole responsible for the disease while others associate multiple environmental pollutants such as dust and smoke emissions.
According to a study conducted by National Institute of Health (NIH), during the decade of 1983-1993 as much as 15 per cent of the population in the industrialised countries suffered from allergies.
