Paramedic uniform allergy still a mystery
The cause of allergies suffered by about 150 South Australian paramedics has still not been determined, nearly seven months after they occurred.
SA Ambulance issued interim blue outfits after staff began suffering itching and rashes, and in one case a life-threatening allergic reaction, to a new batch of green uniforms.
Metropolitan director Keith Driscol says a chemical in the dye has always been suspected, but extensive testing has not been able to pinpoint the exact problem.
Mr Driscol says staff helped design the new uniforms, which are expected to be rolled out by August.
"Obviously though we want to make sure that they are safe and that they are appropriate and that they'll be able to do the job that they're designed for," he said.
"So we just need to go through a few checks and balances there and then obviously we need to get them manufactured, and we're looking at, you know, around about 3000 staff that will need a uniform."
