Allergist Give Tips For Best Allergy Medicine

Columbus, Ga. (WTVM) - The recent unusual warm spells in the southeast has brought people out in shorts and t-shirts in March.

It's also brought out another warm-weather phenomenon: allergies.  "Itchy eyes, watery eyes, and stuffy nose is what I experience.  I basically feel like I have a cold," said Allergy Suffer Leila Alvarez.

Allergist say this year the pollen count is double than last year.  That's why 8-year-old Khalil Gaddy and his mom came to the Allergy Center Wednesday morning to see Dr. Robert Chrzanowski because his symptoms have gotten worse.  "Here recently he's had reactions such as sneezing, watering eyes and itchy eyes.  I has caused a chain reaction that gives him symptoms of asthma," said Khalil's Mother Maxine Gaddy.

Doctors say if you are a victim of allergies, there are some things allergist want you to do.  "We want you to avoid your pollen exposure as much as possible.  Also, please keep your windows down in the house and in the car.  We recommend folks to use a nasal steriod with an  anahistamine.  If that doesn't work we recommend people try allergy shots," said Chrzanowski.

Mrs. Gaddy says a shot may an option since others who have taken it highly recommend it.  "They've helped quite a lot and I don't feel the itchy and watery eyes so much.  I still get a runny nose, but I feel a lot better," said Alvarez.

Chrzanowski says the best over the counter medication for allergies is Zyrtec.

He also recommends folks to spend limited amount of time outside and most importantly wash your hands frequently after being outside.
