Could alternative allergy treatment cure the sniffles?

David Leonard

Oldsmar, Florida - Marci Williams knows when it's allergy season by watching her 8-year-old son Matthew.

"He sneezes, then he gets the dark circles under his eyes and he gets really tired."

A specialist diagnosed Matthew with allergies from various foods pollen and other products.

"They put these different foods on me, and they put the peanut butter on me and my tongue started to burn," said Matthew as he remembered the allergy test he got a year ago.

More than the allergies, Williams worried about drug treatments. "I don't want to put the stuff in him if I don't have to. I am trying to find every way around it," says Williams.

Two months ago she turned to chiropractor Dale Hanson at the Advanced Allergy Relief Centers in Oldsmar.

"An allergy is an error. Your body sees something harmless like pollen whenever it's exposed," said Hanson.

To fix that error, Hanson places a cuff on the arm attached to a computer that send digital signals he says mimic substances the patient may be allergic to. Once the substance has been identified, like pollen, grass and certain foods, the software sends the signal again. Hanson then applies acupressure along the spine. sends digital signals he says mimic substances that patients may be allergic to.

"What we are doing is pairing a little bit of exposure with a positive stimulus. So the next time they are exposed, they kind of know the allergen for what it is… harmless," says Hanson.

The methods have not been tested in clinical trial and Hanson says he can't treat all allergies. Williams says she has seen an improvement in Matthew's symptoms, and hopes it will stick.
